To create your bronze heirloom, Forever In Bronze uses the lost wax process. This process requires time and skill, but produces the finest results available.
Making the silicone mold
The first step in this process is to make a silicone rubber mold from your plaster cast. This mold picks up the tiniest details, down to a finger print.
Create the wax cast
After removing the plaster from the silicone mold, we pour hot wax into the cavity.
Ceramic shell
When the wax has cooled, we remove it from the rubber mold and coat it with a hard ceramic shell. This shell creates a funnel for pouring in the molten bronze.
Once the ceramic has hardened it is fired to melt out the wax (this is where the "lost wax" process gets its name).
Pouring the bronze
Bronze ingots are melted in crucibles at temperatures over 2000 degress F. The liquid bronze is poured into the hollow ceramic shell, where it perfectly takes the shape of the original plaster cast.
Final steps
After the bronze cools inside the ceramic shell (about an hour), the ceramic is chipped and sandblasted away to reveal the bronze.
The final step is the artful application of heat and chemicals to give your piece a rich brown patina.
